SLIDE GATE PLATES

A slide gate plate is a high-performance refractory plate that slides across a stationary plate to control molten steel flow from a ladle. Two or three plates with concentric bores form the gate; sliding alignment opens, throttles or closes the flow. They replace the older stopper-rod system in nearly all modern continuous-casting steel ladles.

Three primary grades: Alumina-Carbon (Al₂O₃-C) for standard carbon steel duty, Alumina-Zirconia-Carbon (Al₂O₃-ZrO₂-C) for higher sequence casting and special steels, and Magnesia-Carbon (MgO-C) for high-manganese and basic-slag duty. Plate thickness, bore diameter and corner geometry are matched to the ladle gate mechanism (typically RHI, IFGL or Vesuvius design).

A standard alumina-carbon plate set typically delivers 4–8 heats in carbon steel duty. Premium Al₂O₃-ZrO₂-C plates extend this to 8–14 heats. Plate life is limited mainly by erosion at the bore from steel flow and by thermal cycling between heats. Sequence casting (multiple heats per ladle) accelerates wear; ladle preheat practice is the biggest single life lever.

They are proprietary, each major refractory manufacturer (IFGL, RHI, Vesuvius, Krosaki) makes plates dimensioned to their gate mechanism. A plate from one manufacturer will usually not fit another's gate without a frame change. Standard alumina-carbon plates for the most-common gate sizes are stocked for 2–5 day delivery. Specialty Al₂O₃-ZrO₂-C plates and non-standard bore sizes are typically 4–6 weeks lead time, sometimes shorter under campaign agreements. For a critical mill running on safety stock, we can hold dedicated reserve inventory under a supply contract.
