LADLE SHROUDS

Shield the steel stream from oxidation during ladle-to-tundish transfer

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Ladle shrouds are tubular refractory components that form a sealed connection between the ladle bottom nozzle and the tundish, preventing atmospheric oxygen from contacting the steel stream. Without a ladle shroud, steel picks up oxygen and nitrogen causing inclusions that degrade finished steel quality.

INSTALLATION NOTES

  1. 1

Always pre-heat shroud to 800–1000°C using lance pre-heater before first use

  2. 2

Apply anti-oxidation paste to upper flange seating area

  3. 3

Argon purging: connect purge line before opening ladle, purge at 10–15 Nl/min

  4. 4

Check bayonet lock engagement before casting, loose connection causes steel splash

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A ladle shroud is a long ceramic tube that connects the ladle slide-gate to the tundish, protecting the falling steel stream from atmospheric oxygen. Without a shroud, oxygen pickup creates non-metallic inclusions that damage downstream casting quality. Modern continuous casting cannot run safely without shrouds.
