TUNDISH NOZZLES FOR CONTINUOUS CASTING

A tundish nozzle (well nozzle) is the refractory seat in the tundish bottom against which the monoblock stopper closes. It meters molten steel from the tundish into the mould or submerged entry shroud. Made from isostatically pressed alumina-graphite, often with a zirconia bore insert, it must hold a precise, erosion-resistant bore through long casts.

The stopper nose seats into the tundish nozzle bore. As the stopper raises and lowers, the gap between stopper and nozzle opens or closes, controlling the steel flow rate into the mould. The two components are matched as a pair, bore and nose geometry must align for a clean seal and accurate flow.

Aluminium-killed steels deposit alumina inclusions on the nozzle bore, narrowing it (clogging) and disrupting flow. A zirconia insert at the bore resists this build-up and erosion, keeping the bore dimension stable through sequence casting. Argon purging is also used alongside the insert to suppress clogging.

TCM (tube-change mechanism) systems allow the tundish/submerged nozzle to be changed during casting without stopping the sequence, extending caster runtime. Hot-change tundish nozzle systems are available alongside standard and zirconia-insert nozzles for billet, bloom and slab casters.
