MAGNESIA-CARBON (MGO-C) BRICKS

MgO-C bricks are the standard lining for basic oxygen furnaces (BOF/converters), electric arc furnace (EAF) hot spots and slag lines, and steel ladle slag and metal lines. The magnesia resists basic steelmaking slags while the graphite makes the brick non-wetting and highly thermal-shock resistant, essential for the severe cycling of converters and arc furnaces.

Carbon content typically ranges from 8% to 18% graphite. Lower-carbon grades (8–10%) are used for the metal line and general lining; higher-carbon grades (14–18%) are used at the slag line where non-wetting behaviour and thermal shock resistance matter most. Metallic antioxidants (Al, Si, B₄C) protect the carbon in service.

Two reasons: magnesia (MgO) is chemically compatible with the basic (high-CaO, high-FeO) slags of steelmaking, so it is not dissolved like acid or neutral refractories; and the graphite is non-wetting, so slag cannot penetrate the brick pores. Together they give excellent corrosion and penetration resistance in BOF, EAF and ladle slag zones.

They are usually laid dry or with a thin carbon-bonded mortar and very tight joints. Carbon level is matched to duty (higher at the slag line). Oxidising atmosphere should be limited during heat-up to protect the carbon bond; antioxidant-containing grades form a dense protective zone once in service.
