CARBON BRICKS

Carbon bricks are used where chemical resistance or high thermal conductivity matters most: blast furnace hearths and bottoms, chemical and acid reactor linings, electrolytic cell linings, and vessels handling strong acids such as hydrofluoric and phosphoric acid that destroy oxide ceramics. They are specified for reducing or non-oxidising service.

Carbon is chemically inert to almost all mineral acids, alkalis and organic solvents, including hydrofluoric and phosphoric acid that attack silica-based and most oxide refractories. This near-universal corrosion resistance, combined with high thermal conductivity, makes carbon brick the material of choice for aggressive chemical and blast-furnace-hearth duty.

No, carbon oxidises (burns off) in air above roughly 400–500°C, so carbon bricks are specified for reducing or chemical (non-oxidising) environments, not open-air oxidising furnaces. In blast furnace hearths and sealed chemical vessels the atmosphere is non-oxidising, so the carbon is stable and long-lasting.

Impervious carbon brick is resin-impregnated to fill the pores, giving very low permeability (apparent porosity under ~2%).
