Acid Proofing 1500°C

CARBON BRICKS

High-carbon anti-corrosion bricks for chemical reactors, acid towers and blast furnace hearths

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Carbon bricks are pitch- or resin-bonded blocks of amorphous carbon or graphite (>90% C) prized for near-universal chemical resistance, they withstand strong mineral acids (including HF and phosphoric acid) that destroy oxide ceramics, plus high thermal conductivity for blast furnace hearths. Because carbon oxidises in air above about 400–500°C, they are specified for reducing or chemical (non-oxidising) service. Impervious resin-impregnated grades give the lowest permeability.

INSTALLATION NOTES

  1. 1

Joint with carbon-based / furan resin cement compatible with the chemical service

  2. 2

Keep out of oxidising atmospheres above ~400°C to prevent carbon burn-off

  3. 3

Use impervious (resin-impregnated) grade where low permeability to acids is required

  4. 4

Behind-brick membrane recommended for acid-vessel linings

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Carbon bricks are used where chemical resistance or high thermal conductivity matters most: blast furnace hearths and bottoms, chemical and acid reactor linings, electrolytic cell linings, and vessels handling strong acids such as hydrofluoric and phosphoric acid that destroy oxide ceramics. They are specified for reducing or non-oxidising service.
