What is the difference between acid-resistant tiles and standard ceramic floor tiles?

Standard ceramic tiles have 5–15% porosity and absorb chemicals over time, leading to staining, cracking and floor failure. Acid-resistant tiles are vitrified to under 2% porosity, formulated with acid-stable feldspathic glass, and tested per IS 4457 / DIN 51091 for chemical resistance. They cost 3–6× more per square metre but last 10–20× longer in chemical environments.

What standards do acid-resistant tiles comply with?

IS 4457 (Indian Standard) specifies acid-resistance, porosity, water absorption, modulus of rupture, and thermal-shock requirements. International equivalents are DIN 51091 (Germany), ASTM C-279 (USA), and EN 12808 (Europe). What sizes and thicknesses are available?

Standard sizes: 150×150 mm, 200×200 mm, 230×115 mm, and 300×300 mm. Thicknesses: 20, 25, 30, 40 mm. Heavy-duty industrial floors specify 30–40 mm; lighter laboratory and dairy use specifies 20–25 mm. Anti-skid finishes (for wet areas) and conductive grades (for explosive atmospheres) are made to order.

What jointing is used with acid-resistant tiles?

For most chemical floors: silicate cement (sulphuric, HCl, dilute acids, low cost), furan resin (best general resistance including organic acids), or epoxy resin (mechanical impact areas, food and pharma). Joint width is typically 3–6 mm. The membrane below the tile (bituminous or rubber) is just as important as the joint material — both must be specified together.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Acid resistant tiles are thin-section vitrified ceramic tiles used to protect floors, walls, drainage channels, and work surfaces from chemical spillage. Unlike standard ceramic floor tiles, acid resistant tiles achieve near-zero porosity through high-temperature firing, and are installed with acid-resistant mortar and grout to form a fully impervious chemical-resistant surface.

INSTALLATION NOTES

Substrate: smooth, level concrete (± 3mm in 3m) — grind high spots, fill low spots with epoxy mortar

Use only acid-resistant tile adhesive mortar (furan-based for strong acids, potassium silicate for milder duty)

Lay tiles with minimum 3mm joint width — do not butt joint

Grout all joints with acid-resistant grout immediately after tile adhesive has set (24–48 hrs)

Seal around drains and wall junctions with acid-resistant flexible sealant

Cure for 5–7 days before any chemical exposure

Test: cover with dilute acid solution for 24 hours before commissioning
