Why Supplier Selection Matters More Than Price
In the refractory industry, the difference between a reliable supplier and an unreliable one is not just a few percentage points on price — it is the difference between a lining that lasts 200 heats and one that fails at 80. It is the difference between getting technical support when a lining fails at 2 AM and getting voicemail. It is the difference between consistent quality and a gamble with every shipment.
We have been in this industry since 1980 and have seen procurement teams save 5% on price only to lose 50% on campaign life. Use this checklist to evaluate suppliers — including us. We are confident we will score well, but more importantly, we want you to make an informed decision.
The 10-Point Supplier Evaluation Checklist
1. Authorized Dealership and Manufacturing Credentials
Is the supplier an authorized dealer of established refractory manufacturers, or are they sourcing from unknown or variable sources? Authorized dealers have a direct relationship with the manufacturer, access to the full product range, and accountability for quality.
- Ask for dealership certificates from major manufacturers
- Verify the certificate directly with the manufacturer if in doubt
- Check if the supplier has ISO 9001 certification for their quality management system
2. Quality Test Certificates with Every Shipment
Every batch of refractory material should come with a test certificate showing the actual tested properties of that specific batch — not a generic datasheet. Key values to look for:
- Chemical analysis (Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, etc.)
- Physical properties (bulk density, apparent porosity, cold crushing strength)
- Batch number and manufacturing date
- Testing standard used (IS, ASTM, EN)
Red flag: A supplier who cannot provide batch-specific test certificates, or who provides the same certificate number for every shipment, is not testing their material properly.
3. Product Range and Availability
Can the supplier provide the full range of refractory products you need from a single source? Working with multiple suppliers for different products creates logistical complexity and makes it harder to get integrated technical support.
- Does the supplier stock common items for immediate delivery?
- What is the lead time for non-stock items?
- Can they supply both standard and custom shapes?
4. Technical Support Capability
This is where suppliers truly differentiate themselves. Technical support includes:
- Material selection assistance for your specific application
- Lining design and installation guidance
- On-site supervision during critical installations
- Failure analysis when things go wrong
- Performance improvement recommendations
Test it: Before placing a large order, ask the supplier a detailed technical question about your application. The quality and speed of their response tells you a lot.
5. Industry Experience and Track Record
How long has the supplier been in the refractory business? Who are their major clients? Can they provide references from plants similar to yours?
- Ask for a client list (they should be willing to share major references)
- Contact 2–3 references and ask about quality consistency, delivery reliability, and after-sales support
- Look for experience specifically in your industry (steel, cement, glass, chemical, foundry)
6. Delivery Reliability
Refractory is needed when it is needed. A shutdown waits for no one. Evaluate:
- Does the supplier have a warehouse/stock point near your plant?
- What is their on-time delivery track record? Ask for data, not promises.
- Can they handle emergency requirements?
- Do they provide proper packaging to prevent damage in transit?
7. Price Transparency and Stability
The lowest price is not always the best price, but pricing should be transparent and fair:
- Ask for a detailed price breakdown (material, transport, taxes)
- Understand their pricing basis: are prices fixed for a period, or do they fluctuate with raw material costs?
- Beware of abnormally low prices — they often indicate lower quality, substituted materials, or underfired products
8. After-Sales Service and Warranty
- Does the supplier take responsibility if a product fails to meet its specification?
- Will they conduct a joint failure investigation?
- What is their claims process? Is it straightforward, or designed to discourage claims?
9. Storage and Handling Guidance
A good supplier will advise you on proper storage of refractory materials at your plant. This is especially important for:
- Magnesia-based products (susceptible to hydration from moisture)
- Resin-bonded products (limited shelf life)
- Castables (must be stored in dry conditions, used within expiry date)
10. Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Does the supplier regularly introduce improved products?
- Do they conduct plant trials of new materials?
- Do they share industry best practices and benchmarking data?
- Are they willing to invest time in understanding your plant's specific challenges?
