AL-45 is the 45-50% Al₂O₃ grade in Shanker Agencies’ high alumina bricks range, rated for continuous service to 1300°C.

AL-45 technical specification
Typical values for AL-45 high alumina bricks. Test methods vary by property and product family, so confirm the applicable standard against the manufacturer datasheet before specifying.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Al₂O₃ content | 45-50% |
| Fe₂O₃ content | 2.5% |
| Apparent porosity | 22-26% |
| Cold crushing strength | 40 MPa |
| Refractoriness (PCE) | Orton 34* |
| Max service temperature | 1300°C |
* Reference value: Crown Ceramics’ published PCE for its 45% Al₂O₃ brick (Crown-45). Confirm against your supplier’s TDS.
Where AL-45 is used
Is AL-45 right for your application?
- Rated for continuous service up to 1300°C.
- Also meets SK 30, SK 32 requirements. Those are lower duties, so a lighter grade may be the more economical choice.

Reading an SK code correctly. SK (Seger Kegel) is a cone designation, and each step carries an accepted minimum Al₂O₃ content in trade practice. The dependable way to match an SK enquiry to a grade is that minimum alumina figure, which is how the equivalence above is derived. Note that a brick’s measured PCE and its SK trade grade are two different numbers and will not always agree. Suppliers also differ at the margins, most often around SK 34. When comparing offers, check Al₂O₃ and PCE together rather than the SK code alone.

Standard SK steps with the SAPL grade that meets or exceeds each one. Grades are matched at or above the minimum alumina for the step, so an SK enquiry is never answered with an under-spec material.
Installation notes
- 1Store in dry conditions, protect from moisture and contamination before use
- 2Use matching high alumina mortar (same Al₂O₃ % as brick) for jointing
- 3Maintain joint thickness 1.5–3 mm for optimal bond integrity
- 4Follow controlled dry-out schedule: 20°C/hr to 110°C, hold 12 hrs, then 30°C/hr to operating temp
- 5Apply expansion allowances: 6–8 mm per metre for silica-bonded grades, 8–10 mm for Al₂O₃ >70%
